International QR Code payments between Nepal and India will soon begin. Six months will pass before this facility is officially announced as part of an international payment service between PhonePay, a payment operator in Nepal, and NIPL, the international division of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in India.

Customers can use QR codes to make payments in Nepal if they use the BHIM UPI and PhonePe payment service provider platforms in India. In light of this, PhonePay, a payment company in Nepal, has scheduled the system’s launch for this Wednesday morning.

As per PhonePe, eSewa and over six banks have partnered thus far to facilitate international payments. It is rumoured that these financial institutions accept payments via PhonePay QR codes given to retailers by Indian customers.

The PhonePe system is prepared to handle international payments. Tomorrow, we are going to launch the system. We are gradually adding banks and digital wallets to the system.”

Customers from India will be able to make payments in Nepal, but not immediately. Nepali customers will be able to make payments in India. PhonePe is awaiting Nepal Rastra Bank’s approval for this.

“Nepalese customers will have to wait for another one-and-a-half months to make payments in India,” according to a source. “We have already corresponded with Rashtra Bank on the matter of Nepali nationals travelling to India to make payments. The idea that the National Bank ought to change the legislation has been brought up. An assurance has been provided that approval will be granted within the next fifteen days.”

The financial institution and the wallet will determine the service charge for the transaction. Payment service providers and financial institutions that are interested in accepting international payments can sign up and claim PhonePay.

For the convenience of its merchants, the company has added international payment options, as stated in the caption. Esewa has not provided any details regarding the start time. The launch of international payment services in their systems will be announced separately by financial institutions and other payment service providers.
